If you’re a mom, this probably sounds familiar — because life is full, loud, and busy. Printing photos always falls to the bottom of the to-do list. How to Hang Family Photos

When it comes to home decor, how you hang family photos can make all the difference. These portraits are so much more than just memories. Whether you’re working with a small gallery wall or a single striking piece, there are a few key principles to keep in mind that can elevate your décor and create a personal, inviting atmosphere. I’m going to walk you through some expert tips for displaying your prints and making the most of your family photos.

Consider the Placement and Space

Think about layout first. Are you imagining a feature wall with multiple photos, or are you highlighting one large piece? The size of the room and the wall space available will play a huge role in your decision.

• Living Rooms
  • A large print or a small gallery wall can become the focal point of the room.
• Hallways and Corridors
  • These spaces are ideal for narrow clusters or rows of photos, creating a personal path for viewers.
• Bedrooms
  • Personal and intimate images work well here—think wedding photos, special vacation pictures, etc.
• Dining Areas
  • Opt for photos that invite conversation or create a warm, welcoming vibe.
• Take note of furniture placement and other wall features
  • Things like light switches or windows can impact your photo’s visual flow.

Eye Level Is Key

When hanging photos, I like to position the center of the image at eye level for the average viewer. This creates a more balanced, engaging effect. The general rule of thumb is about 57 to 60 inches from the floor to the center of the piece. The same would go for a collage of photos; I like the center of the whole grouping to be around 57-60 inches.

Oversized Pieces: If I’m working with a larger piece, I hang it slightly lower to avoid creating an awkward visual gap between the artwork and other room elements.

Multiple Photos: For a series of smaller images, I keep the center points aligned or evenly spaced, so the arrangement feels cohesive.

Create Balance and Harmony

Whether you’re displaying a single photograph or a collection of images, creating a sense of balance is important. This doesn’t necessarily mean perfectly symmetrical arrangements, but the overall weight of the photos should feel evenly distributed across the wall.

For Solo Pieces: Pair a large photograph with smaller elements in the surrounding space, such as potted plants or light fixtures, to avoid a lonely, unbalanced feel.

For Gallery Walls: You can mix and match photo sizes, frames, and orientations (portrait vs. landscape), but I like to ensure the spacing between each frame remains consistent. A common spacing is 2-4 inches between photos.

Frame Choice Matters

The frame you choose is just as important as the photo itself. The right frame can accentuate the subject, enhance the mood, and even complement your room’s color scheme. Consider these guidelines:

• Neutral Frames: Black, white, or wood tones are timeless options that suit a variety of styles.
• Bold Frames: For a more eclectic or modern look, colored or metallic frames can make a statement. Just make sure the frame doesn’t compete with the photo.
• Unframed Prints: Canvas wraps or metal prints can offer a sleek, contemporary touch without the need for traditional framing.

Remember, the frame should complement the image but not overpower it.

Avoid Overcrowding Your Walls

While it’s tempting to cover every inch of wall space with photos, less is often more. Overcrowding can overwhelm the room and dilute the impact of each individual photograph. Space out your photos to allow each one to breathe, creating a sense of flow rather than clutter.

If you’re working with a smaller wall, consider creating a clean, minimalist gallery that only includes your top favorite photos. This approach can be just as powerful as a more intricate arrangement, especially when you’re focusing on quality over quantity.

An amazing teammate for any first time OR seasoned mother!

Stephanie Kaufman has been a Labor and Deliver Nurse in Hutchinson for about 28 years and started focusing on lactation and was hired as Lactation Coordinator at Hutch in 2015. She became an IBCLC International Certified Lactation Consultant in 2016. She serves new moms at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where she still works part-time, and she opened her own private practice, Shine Lactation, in February of 2023!

What to expect

For moms that really want to get a jump on nursing education, Stephanie offers prenatal consultations, one on one or sometimes lactation classes. When baby is here, she loves to visit clients during their first week at home, and she comes to you! She can do weight checks before and after a feeding to see how much baby is eating (a HUGE piece of mind for many moms who worry if baby is getting enough). She has tons of tricks for over or undersupplying mamas to get your supply leveled out, as well as latching help to minimize pain. She can educate you on introducing solids and what weening will look like down the road, as well as navigating pumping and going back to work if you plan to. Bonus! She is a newborn sleep specialist too, and she can help you work through those first weeks of crazy feeding and sleeping patterns.

If any new moms are nervous about learning to nurse their new baby, or if any seasoned mom’s end up with a challenging baby for their 3rd or 4th, I’d recommend Stephanie all day! She is as sweet as can be, and she would be a wonderful asset for anyone with a new baby.

The Best Prenatal Chiropractor Around

Dr. Lynnette is certified in Pediatrics and Maternal Care, with most of her clients being infants, children and pregnant women. She is also certified in the Webster Technique, which is a specific analysis and correction of the pelvis to remove any restrictions that could affect the birth outcome. Many women with breech babies are referred to Dr. Lynnette. The technique, which has an 80% success rate, is non-invasive and allows the baby to turn himself after aligning the mother’s pelvis.

For expecting mamas, she recommends starting with a discovery visit to discuss any aches and pains you’re having. She’ll also identify any other issues that could cause future pain. Every mama is different, and she knows whether stretching, symptomatic care, or regular maintenance adjustments are the best fix. After a few initial visits to address these things, Dr. Lynnette recommends prenatal chiropractic care visits as often as OB visits. So once a month in the beginning, then every other week as you get closer to due date. Then weekly leading up to birth! This consistent care is immensely helpful in getting baby into a great position to help with labor and delivery.

I can’t say enough great things about Dr. Lynnette and her amazing staff. Everyone is friendly and welcoming, and she is an incredible healthcare provider. She truly had me feeling amazing my entire pregnancy. I firmly believe she was key in my incredible labor progression and natural delivery of my near 11 pound baby!

I had a crazy awesome VBAC experience with my 3rd in 2022, and I just feel compelled to share with you all!

To back track, with my first baby I was induced, got an epidural. After fully dilating and pushing for 3 hours I was labeled “failure to progress” and had to get a c-section. It went fine, Isaac was completely healthy, and weighed 8lbs 13oz, and was everything I’d dreamed of for over two years!

With my second, my doc said Isaac didn’t come out because he was “too big” so he recommended I just schedule a c-section for this baby. I trusted him and we did, and had another 8lb 13oz baby boy, Asher.

But something in me started to doubt what my doc said about my “big” babies needing c-sections. After researching birth more (which I barely did at all with the first two) I began to see that we are BUILT to give birth. God designed our bodies for this!  I decided that with my next baby I wanted to trust God to get me through a VBAC. I wanted to have to lean on Him fully through an experience like that. So, I found a new doctor that was open to me trying for a VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section), and I kept studying!

I ended up dilating to 3cm before labor, 4cm after a membrane sweep, but still hadn’t gone into labor at 40w4d. So between my track record of not small babies and this one looking like it would be big as well, I consented to being induced on 8/12/22. 

Pitocin has shot my labor into overdrive twice now; I (and my babies) respond really well to it.  After 2.5 hours of crazy Pitocin contractions and sitting on a birthing ball, I was ready to push! About an hour and a half later my sweet Daniel made it out, and weight 10lbs 12oz! *mind blown* (Lol at his first pics with me below, he came out a toddler)

I shook my head in shock for the next 4 hours. I couldn’t believe we did it! AND HE WAS HUGE!  We are meant to do it ladies. I’m a small person at only 5’2”, if I can do it, you can do it too!

I wanted to share all the factors I believe helped me achieve this incredible VBAC experience even with being induced and without an epidural. Find those here in *Part Two*!

If you read *Part One* of Daniel’s birth story, I’m sure you’re wondering how I did it!

There are so many factors that I believe helped me get my VBAC even with my giant baby. Any and all of these can help you prepare for your next birth too!

Education

I have to start with education. I wish someone would have told me how much there is to learn about birth. And the more you learn, the better the chance at a great delivery. Don’t just blindly trust your doctors, be informed too. I learned SO much from Bridget Teyler and her Built to Birth course, as well as Susan White and her childbirth education. I’d highly recommend them both!

Chiropractor

Another thing that I did during pregnancy was see a chiropractor that specialized in prenatal care. For me that was Lynnette Hendrickson at Hendrickson Chiropractic in Newton. She had me feeling great clear up through 40 weeks! She’s had extensive training on prenatal chiropractic care. Including how to ease issues like round ligament pain (which I always have bad in pregnancy) and sciatica. As well as opening your pelvis up to allow baby to get into a good position for labor. I firmly believe she was a huge factor in how baby was able to come down like he was supposed to!

Swimming

Everyone says “walk walk walk” for exercise your whole pregnancy and it’ll help you in labor too. I love going on walks, but for some reason when I’m pregnant my hips get all out of wack when I walk. We would walk one time and I would be MISERABLE for days after. I used to just accept it as part of pregnancy, you’ll be uncomfortable because you’re pregnant right? Well I was tired of it, so I looked for an alternative way to exercice and tried swimming! I would get a pool noodle and kick down and back in the lap pool at the YMCA. I never felt that pelvic discomfort and pain again. You can find different pregnancy water workout ideas on YouTube.

Positions During Pregnancy and Labor

From following Bridget Teyler on Instagram, I learned a ton about baby’s positioning and what all factors into it. Sitting all slouched back on the couch is bad (baby sinks back to follow your spine and ends up sunny side up). Sitting on an exercise ball in the 3rd trimester can help baby get into a great position. I’ll talk about labor positions when I get to epidurals!

Support Team

I had a doula with this birth and I’d recommend that all day too! Just having someone there as knowledgeable as my friend Erin (insert endless doula credentials and experience here) was so comforting. She rubbed my back the entire time so I could squeeze Michael’s hands through each contraction, then was just the best cheerleader through pushing. And I know if any issues came up or plans needed to change, I could count on her advice on how to proceed. Also, I have the best hubby in the world. He was totally supportive of me attempting a VBAC and was an amazing, comforting presence while I labored.

No Epidural

I firmly believe the reason my first birth didn’t progress was because I got an epidural. You simply can’t move into proper labor positions for baby laying down. I have since learned that hospitals are supposed to turn you on your sides. They can give you a peanut ball, etc to try to help with positioning. My first hospital did not, I just laid there and didn’t know any better.

So with this VBAC I was determined not to get stuck on that bed, which meant no epidural. I just knew if I was going to get this (potentially) giant baby out, I was going to need to be able to move. I had to try different positions to get him to come down. 

The only pain management I used was a Pudendal Block; numbing shots you can get *down there* when you’re pushing. I do believe that possibly helped ease the “ring of fire” they talk about, because that wasn’t too terrible. The painful part for me was the stretching and tearing due to his size. I’m sure that would have been even worse if I hadn’t gotten the Pudendal Block.

With all that said, I have absolutely nothing against others who have gotten epidurals or are planning on getting one. You do you! I just wanted to share why they didn’t work for me. I do believe they can contribute to issues resulting in c-sections, so do your research! 

Breathing techniques

So how did I get through crazy Pitocin contractions with no epidural? Not going to lie, it was insane. But I believe a huge factor was breathing techniques! I learned these from the Built to Birth YouTube videos and practiced a lot before labor. The cleansing breaths before each contraction, not holding your breath during, and vocalizing in low tons all worked wonders for me! Can’t say it was pain free by any means, but I closed my eyes and breathed like crazy through each one. And it got me through!

Positions for Pushing 

The last tip I have comes from pushing positions! I’d read about when you lay on your back to push (like most hospitals encourage) it curves your tailbone up. This makes it get in the way of labor and pushing. So I knew I didn’t want to be on my back. I tried hands and knees for a little bit, but I was too exhausted from that insane transition. So my doula suggested side laying, and that’s how I pushed for the rest of the time. And it worked! I still tore really bad (because he was giant) but man, we got him out! I still can’t believe it. 

If you’re expecting or want more children, I hope you learned something here from my experience, and I encourage you to research and learn even more! I felt so much more empowered this time, and was able to have a successful VBAC thanks to the combination of all these factors. I’m so thankful for this experience, and look forward to my next birth in May 2024!

There’s so much pressure to nail your family photo outfits. I’ve got tons of advice, and I walk all my clients through how to put together amazing looks for pictures. Here are some DON’Ts for you to keep in mind as you design your outfits!

Too Matchy

Back in the day it was common to have everyone wear almost the same exact outfit (remember jeans and white t-shits??). That look is super dated now, but some people still get caught up in wearing all the same color, or everyone in jeans, etc. There are so many fun color palettes out there to design your family photo outfits around. Just go to Pinterest and type “family photo color schemes” and pick your favorite! Make sure to add different textures like chunky knits, lace, flowy dresses, and a couple patterns for visual interest.

Poor Fit

There’s a huge difference between good and bad fitting clothes. You can have the cutest outfit in the world, but if it doesn’t fit well it won’t translate to amazing photos! This is especially tough to nail for babies and toddlers (since they grow so fast!). Also for moms while they’re in the growing family stage. Whether you just had a baby or are in between babies, it seems like your clothes sizes change constantly.

If you’re a mom that has some things you’d like to hide (let’s be honest, that’s all of us) make sure you give yourself some shape somewhere else. Or if you have bigger hips like me, go flowy on the bottom and highlight your smaller waist! If you want to hid a post-baby tummy, go flowy on top but show off your smaller assets (legs, narrow shoulders, whatever that is for you!) The worst thing you can do is try to hide everything with super baggy, shapeless clothes from head to toe.

Many mamas freeze and can’t make decisions about what to do with their photos, or simply never find time to order. You’re busy! I created this quick list of ideas to help you dream up ways to display those beautiful memories you made. Then when you shoot with me, I will make all your ideas happen for you!

1. Frame them or print on canvas – Imagine walking through your living room and seeing your favorite people in large frames on the wall, reminding you why you work so hard to provide and care for them.
2. Photo albums – Take the best shots and make an heirloom photo book you can keep and pass down for generations. A great conversation piece for your coffee table.
3. Walnut photo display box – Perfect for a dresser or bookshelf, flip back through your photos whenever you need a smile. You could even frame a few and make a gallery wall, then change out the photos occasionally to keep it fresh!

Above you’ll see examples of my walnut display boxes and wall art. These high-quality boxes are STUNNING and so versatile. Frame some of the matted prints in sets of three, four, or even six, then switch them out from time to time! The large prints are so eye catching and they are total statement pieces in the home.
